Things you can do

Living with Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) requires developing strategies that work for you. Some days will be better or worse than others, and how you deal with them can affect the way you feel. Here are some steps you can take to feel better:

1. Plan ahead: Think about ways you can control situations where you feel you might experience symptoms. Request aisle seats at the theater or on an airplane so that you can get up easily. Break trips up into shorter segments so that you're not forced to sit long hours at a time.

2. Stand up: Many people find symptoms less disruptive when standing.

3. Don't fight it: Suppressing the urge to move will make it worse. Get up and move around, go for a walk, or find another activity that takes your mind off the discomfort in your legs.

4. Keep a journal: Track your efforts to manage your symptoms to see if they are working. Document what you have done to cope with your condition and how well it worked. You could also record daily activities like diet, exercise, etc. Always take your journal to your doctor visits.

5. Occupy your mind: Some people with RLS find that keeping their minds actively engaged through activities such as reading, crafting, playing games, or conversation helps.

6. Find a RLS support group: Participate in a local support group where you can talk about your condition, share information, tips and gain insights from others who suffer from RLS. For more information and a support group near you, visit: www.rls.org

7. Make some changes: Making some lifestyle changes can help you relieve your RLS symptoms and feel better, too.
