Restless Legs Syndrome for Patients

Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) is a neurologic movement disorder characterized by an irresistible urge to move the legs. Restless Legs Syndrome is an important physical cause of sleep disturbance1 and can negatively affect daily activities.2

Restless Legs Syndrome affects both men and women, although Restless Legs Syndrome is slightly more prevalent in women.3,4 Often not diagnosed until middle age, Restless Legs Syndrome is chronic and increases in severity with age.5

Primary (idiopathic) Restless Legs Syndrome:
  • May start at any age3,6
  • Incidence increases with age5
  • Has a positive family history in about 60% of cases5

Patients often have difficulty explaining the unpleasant sensations in their legs, using terms such as creeping, crawling, tingling, aching, burning, pulling, painful, itching, and cramping.1,7 These sensations are usually temporarily or partially relieved by movement as long as the activity continues. The symptoms are usually worse or only occur in the evening or at night.
