Living with RLS
If you are already taking medication, your doctor may also recommend changes to your lifestyle that may also help relieve Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) symptoms. For starters, you may:
- Look into various activities that may help you deal with RLS. These could include walking, stretching, taking a hot or cold bath, or massages. (Talk with your doctor before exercising.)
- Limit your alcohol intake.
- Avoid caffeine found in coffee, tea, soft drink and chocolate. This could also help promote good sleep habits.
- Eat a well balanced diet. Be sure to talk with your doctor about healthy food options.
- Discuss your current medications (both prescription and over-the-counter) with your doctor. Some medications may worsen symptoms of RLS. These may include medications used to treat high blood pressure, heart conditions, nausea, cold, allergies, and depression.
- Ask your doctor if you may have an underlying iron or vitamin deficiency. If you have an underlying deficiency, your doctor may recommend supplementing your diet with iron, vitamin B12, or folate.
