Living with Restless Legs Syndrome requires developing coping strategies that work for you. Some days will be better or worse than others, and how you cope with them can affect the way you feel. Here are some steps you can take to feel better:

  • Plan ahead: Think about ways you can control situations where you feel you might experience symptoms.

    • Request aisle seats at the theater or on an airplane so that you can get up easily.

    • Break trips up into shorter segments so that you're not forced to sit long hours at a time.

  • Stand up to Restless Legs Syndrome: Many people find symptoms less disruptive when standing. Raise your desktop or bookstand to a height that will allow you to stand while you work or read.

  • Don't fight it: Suppressing the urge to move will make it worse. Get up and move around, go for a walk, or find another activity that takes your mind off your legs.

  • Keep a journal: Track your efforts to manage your symptoms to see if they are working. Note what you have done to cope with your condition and how well it worked.

  • Occupy your mind: Some people with Restless Legs Syndrome find that keeping their minds actively engaged through activities such as reading, crafting, playing games, or conversation helps.

  • Find a local Restless Legs Syndrome support group: Find a local RLS support group where you can talk about your condition and share information and insights.
