Symptoms of RLS

Restless Legs Syndrome (RLS) is usually accompanied or caused by uncomfortable sensory symptoms in the legs. Because these sensations are unusual they can often be hard to describe. If you recognize these symptoms below, discuss them with your doctor:

RLS is considered a life-long condition, can run in families and affects women and men of any age. Women, however, are two to three times more likely than men to have RLS, and symptoms tend to become worse over time.

  • An urge to move the legs, usually accompanied or caused by uncomfortable and unpleasant legs sensations
  • Symptoms begin or worsen during periods of rest or inactivity such as lying or sitting
  • Symptoms are partially or totally relieved by movement, such as walking or stretching, at least as long as the activity continues
  • Symptoms are worse or occur only in the evening or at night

People with RLS often quit doing activities they once enjoyed. Are you no longer taking long trips, going to sports events, or the movies? Avoiding doing some things may help you cope with your RLS symptoms, but you’re not treating the underlying problem.

If you’ve experienced the RLS symptoms above, it’s time to talk to your doctor and learn about what may be right for you.
